cymru leek-o-dil : leek and daffodil ( st davids day 1st march)

combining 2 welsh national symbols


leek

using white wool and 4 4mm needles
cast on 4 sts
increase to end          (8sts)
increase to end          (16sts)
knit rounds until approx 5inches long (13cm)




stem 

 


change to dark green wool
k2 k2tog to end  (12sts)
continue until 12inches (30cm) long
stuff lightly

daffodil

funnel 

 

change to orange wool
  
increase 1 k3 to end        (15 sts )
increase 1 k4 to end        (18 sts )
increase 1 k5 to end        (21 sts )
increase 1 k6 to end        (24 sts )
increase 1 k7 to end        (27 sts )
increase 1 k8 to end        (30 sts )
knit 8 rounds
increase into each stitch
cast off

cast on 22 stitches
work knit row/ purl row
until approx 3inches long (7cm)

sew one leaf at one edge around top of white leek
so that they slightly over-lap
sew 2nd leaf to cover edge of first




sew 3 petals around funnel
sew other 3 around funnel covering gaps

thread orange wool through cast off and draw together slightly

using cream wool add 20 dangling roots















maths : hexagon (6-sided shape)

6-sided shape knitted in the round




any size : just add more rows

could use any type of wool choose needles to suit wool 
thicker wool = larger shape for same number of rows
equal number of stitches on each needle



               cast on 3 stitches 
row 1      increase into each stitch                       6sts
row 2      increase into each stitch                      12sts

               divide onto 3 needles  (4 stitches on each)
                   and continue in the round 

round 1  (increase 1 k1) to end                        18st (6x3)
round 2  (increase 1 k2) to end                         24st (8x3)
round 3  (increase 1 k3) to end                         30st (10x3)
round 4  (increase 1 k4) to end                         36st (12x3)
round 5  (increase 1 k5) to end                         42st (14x3)
round 6  (increase 1 k6) to end                         48st (16x3)
round 7  (increase 1 k7) to end                         54st (18x3)
